Career
Contribution to films
Sachin Pilgaonkar began his career in 1961 when he was just 4 years old. He first appeared in Madhavrao Shinde’s film “Soonbai”. He found his first-ever breakthrough in Rajaparanjape’s Marathi film “Ha Haza Marg Ekla” in 1962. As a child artist, he took part in several notable films that includes “Majhli Didi”, “Jewel Thief”, “Chanda Aur Bijli”, “Brahmachari”, and “Mela”.
His collaboration with fellow child actor Naeem Sayyed (Junior Mehmood) spanned 15 films, starting with the Shammi Kapoor-starrer “Brahmachari” when he was eight. Transitioning to lead roles, Sachin starred opposite Sarika in Rajshri Productions’ “Geet Gaata Chal”.
It marked a successful on-screen pairing at the contemporary time. The duo went on to feature in films like “Zid,” “College Girl,” “Rajshri Productions,” and “Nadiya Ke Paar.” After a stint in lead roles, Sachin returned to supporting roles, making notable contributions to films like “Trishul,” “Sholay,” “Avtaar,” “Sur Sangam,” and “Satte Pe Satta.”
As acting opportunities diminished, he embraced directing, notably in Marathi cinema and ventured into TV serial production. In 2011, one of the best movies of the year that achieved immense success at the box office was “Jaana Pehchana”. His efficiency as an actor was further noticed in 2015 through the film “Katyar Kaljat Ghusli”.
Notably, Sachin’s proficiency in Urdu, required for the role, stemmed from Meena Kumari’s training during their collaboration on “Majhli Didi” in 1966. Thus, it can be said that in the 1980s and 1990s, he was one of the most successful individuals who featured in enormous Marathi films.
Contribution to Television
In the 1990s, Sachin Pilgaonkar made a foray into Indian television by taking up directing roles. One notable venture was the Hindi comedy show “Tu Tu Main Main” on the popular Hindi channel Star Plus.
The show starred his wife, Supriya, and Reema Lagoo, creating a delightful ensemble. Additionally, he helmed “Rin 1 2 3” on DD Metro, a Hindi National channel that specialized in showcasing Bollywood movie parodies.
Another directorial venture was the sitcom “Hadh Kar Di,” featuring Dara Singh, which initially garnered attention but was eventually discontinued. Simultaneously, Sachin ventured into hosting and anchoring Hindi music shows.
In 2006, “Nach Baliye” clinched victory and a prize of Rs. 4 million against stiff competition from nine other celebrity pairs.
In late 2007, Sachin embarked on a new television program called “Eka Peksha Ek” on Zee Marathi. This innovative show focused on dance, seeking hidden talent from all corners of Maharashtra.
His television journey also saw him take on the role of a judge on the reality comedy talent show “Chhote Miyan” in 2009, which aired on Colors TV. It showcased his versatility and contribution to the diverse landscape of Indian television.
As a director
In the 1980s, Sachin became active in directing movies, and his directorial journey began with “Mai Baap” in 1982. His first debut as a director was in 1984 through “Navri Mile Navryala”, which achieved commercial success. Notably, this film also featured his future wife, Supriya Pilgaonkar.
This achievement led him to represent one after another blockbuster in his directorial career. In 1981, another blockbuster named “Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi” arrived. He briefly delved into experimental cinema with his following two projects.
He returned to his comedic roots with the 1990 hit “Aamchya Sarkhe Aamhich.” Sachin continued his directorial journey by showcasing versatility, directing Abhinay Berde, son of the late Laxmikant Berde, in the 2018 film “Ashi Hi Aashiqui,” a production backed by Supriya Pilgaonkar.
In 2017, Sachin celebrated the completion of 50 years in his film career by penning his autobiography, “Hach Maza Marg.” Notably, during this milestone year, he also contributed a ghazal titled “Badal jo ghir ke aaye”. It was made under the pseudonym Shafaq for Govind Nihalani’s directorial debut in Marathi, the 2017 film “Ti Ani Titar.”
However, not every endeavour received unanimous acclaim. In 2018, Sachin starred in the song “Amchi Mumbai Changali Mumbai,” a project that faced criticism from his fans despite his illustrious career in the industry.

Controversy
According to reports, Sachin and his wife were victims of a financial scam in Pune. The accused, Anagha Borikar, was put in jail, and although he got bail, he was denied it in the court season.
The incident unfolded when Sachin Pilgaonkar met Anagha Borikar at a sports event in Panchgani, where he was a chief guest. Borikar, claiming to be a fan of Pilgaonkar’s work, shared details about her business ventures, particularly in the domain of car dealing.
She allegedly promised to facilitate the purchase of a BMW GT for Pilgaonkar at a significantly reduced price of Rs. 30 lakh. It compared to its market value of Rs. 54 lakh. Borikar accepted a cheque of Rs. 3 lakh from Sachin Pilgaonkar, ostensibly in the name of a BMW dealership in Mumbai.
Subsequently, she submitted the cheque to the shop owner and arranged a test drive, convincing Pilgaonkar that the car was brand new. Sachin performed a ceremonial car pooja and, satisfied, paid the remaining Rs. 35 lakh to Borikar during Diwali.
However, the situation took a turn when the BMW shop representatives arrived to reclaim the car after two days. It was then that Sachin Pilgaonkar realized he had fallen victim to a fraudulent scheme. It prompted the police intervention and legal proceedings against Anagha Borikar.
