Controversy
In a recent interview with ABP, Suhasini shared candid insights into her initial apprehensions about Mani Ratnam’s ambitious project, Ponniyin Selvan: I. She revealed how she inadvertently posed as a significant obstacle for Ratnam during the film’s conceptualization phase.
Expressing her concerns openly, Suhasini admitted, “I must confess, I was initially against the idea of Ponniyin Selvan. She carried some reservations, stemming from the disappointment we felt with Iruvar’s reception. As someone involved in its creation, she couldn’t shake off the fear that history-based narratives might not resonate with our audience.”
Recalling her stance, she elaborated, “Being part of the writing process for Iruvar, she held onto a belief that our people craved love stories over historical sagas.
This perspective influenced my reluctance towards Ponniyin Selvan. She persistently urged Mani not to involve me, fearing a similar response to our previous endeavour.”
However, Suhasini acknowledged her misjudgment, admitting, “But I was mistaken. She failed to foresee the audience’s acceptance and the impact of a well-crafted historical narrative. I misunderstood our viewers’ appetite for tradition and history. Mani’s vision proved me wrong, and I’m grateful for that realization.”
