The assassination of John Lennon occurred in 1980 in New York at the hands of a 25-year-old American security guard named Mark David Chapman, who claimed to be a Beatles fan. Chapman fired five hollow-point bullets. Four bullets hit Lennon as he was walking back to his apartment building called ‘The Dakota’ after coming out of a recording session in New York.

Chapman, who came all the way down from Hawaii, had been stalking Lennon for the past few days. On the fateful night when Lennon signed his autograph on his new record ‘Double Fantasy’, Chapman waited for his return and hid in the archway of the building. Around 10:50 P.M., Lennon, along with his wife Yoko Ono, came out from the recording session, and when they reached outside the building, Chapman called out, ‘Mr. Lennon’.

Thereafter, he fired five hollow-point bullets using a special revolver. Four bullets hit Lennon in his back and shoulder, and one barely missed his head. Paramedics rushed Lennon to Roosevelt Hospital, where the medical examiner pronounced him dead at 11:15 P.M. as per the reports of the medical examiner’s report, he died due to excessive loss of blood and shock caused by the gunshots.

After committing this horrific act, instead of fleeing, Chapman remained at the scene and calmly read J.D. Salinger’s book ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ until the police arrested him. He later confessed to the murder and pleaded guilty in June 1981. The judge sentenced him to a term ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment, and the parole board has repeatedly denied his applications.

Investigators and biographers have described obsession, jealousy, and delusion as driving Chapman. He harbored resentment toward Lennon over his wealth, fame, and the controversial statement that the Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’.

Furthermore, he sought notoriety by assassinating a global icon. The killing, which took place outside ‘The Dakota’ on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, shocked the world, dashed hopes of a Beatles reunion, and brought a violent end to an era defined by a revolution of peace, love, and music.
